Overview
If you’re in Pheriche and want to skip the walk back down to Lukla, a helicopter flight is a fast and practical option. We arrange Pheriche to Lukla helicopter transfers with CAAN-licensed operators, for trekkers who are tired, unwell, short on time, or dealing with bad weather on the trail.
This page covers what the flight involves, current pricing, what’s included, and what you need to know before booking.
Pheriche to Lukla Helicopter Flight Overview
Pheriche sits at 4,371m on the Everest Base Camp trekking route. It’s a well-known acclimatization stop with a cluster of lodges run by the local Sherpa community, and it’s also home to the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) clinic, which has treated altitude-related emergencies in the upper Khumbu since 1973.
From Pheriche, our partner operators fly you down to Lukla at a lower elevation, cutting out what would otherwise be two to three days of trekking back through Pangboche, Tengboche, and Namche Bazaar.
Flights depart daily in the early morning, with 5 seats available per flight from this altitude.
Why Take a Helicopter from Pheriche to Lukla?
Trekkers book this flight for a few common reasons:
- Feeling unwell or exhausted after the trek to Everest Base Camp or Island Peak Base Camp
- Needing a medical evacuation, including altitude sickness cases referred by the HRA clinic
- Bad weather or trail conditions making the walk back down difficult
- Simply wanting to save two to three days and fly out instead of walking
It’s also a way to see the Khumbu from the air — the route passes Ama Dablam, Tengboche monastery, and Namche Bazaar before descending into Lukla.

Why the Morning Departure Matters
Pheriche sits in an open, south-facing valley with very little shelter from the wind. Conditions are generally manageable in the early morning and get progressively windier through the day. This is why all departures from Pheriche are scheduled between 6:30 and 9:00 AM — it isn’t a random cut-off, it’s a daily pattern in this valley.
If you’re booking a flight from Pheriche, plan on an early morning departure. Afternoon flights from this location carry a real risk of delay or cancellation due to valley winds.
If You’re Shuttling from Gorakshep
At Gorakshep (5,164 m), the thin air limits helicopters to 2–3 passengers per flight. Because of this, larger groups are sometimes shuttled down to Pheriche in batches, where the lower altitude allows the full group of 5 to fly together to Lukla in one flight. If this applies to you, your group needs to be at the Pheriche helipad and ready to go before 8:00 AM to make the safe morning window.
The pilot has final say on departure timing and passenger load based on conditions on the day.

Important Information Before Booking
- Baggage limit: 15 kg per person, strictly enforced. Total load including passengers and baggage should not exceed the aircraft’s weight limit for this altitude (our internal figures show both 420 kg and 450 kg on file — we’ll confirm the correct limit before your flight).
- Seats fill up in peak season: March to May and September to November are the busiest months, especially when trekkers descending from EBC converge on Pheriche and Dingboche. We’ve seen differing guidance internally on how far ahead to book during peak season (2–3 days in one place, 7–10 days in another) — to be safe, book as early as you can once your plans are firm, and contact us directly for the most current availability.
- Medical evacuations: If you’re flying due to a recommendation from the HRA clinic or any other health provider, contact us immediately via WhatsApp. Medical evacuations are treated as the highest priority, any time of day.
- At the helipad: Stay behind the safety line until the rotors have fully stopped, and approach only when directed by the crew. Never walk behind the helicopter.
- Altitude sickness: If any passenger is flying due to altitude sickness, tell us at the time of booking so the crew can prepare accordingly.
- Operators: We work with CAAN-licensed helicopter operators on this route, reviewed by our team before we partner with them.
Weather and Flight Conditions
Helicopter flights in the Everest region operate under VFR (visual flight rules) and depend on weather and visibility. At Pheriche specifically, wind is the main factor: the valley’s open, south-facing layout means winds build through the day, which is why departures are limited to the early morning window. We can’t guarantee a flight will operate regardless of weather. If your flight is cancelled or delayed due to weather, we’ll rebook you onto the next available window at no extra charge — at Pheriche, this is most often an early morning slot the following day. If you have a flight booked here, it’s worth keeping at least one buffer day in your schedule in case of a weather hold.
Booking Process
You can reach us via WhatsApp or the booking form on this page. We coordinate directly with our partner operators on scheduling, aircraft, and passenger arrangements, and we typically confirm bookings within a few hours during trekking season. For emergency evacuations, contact us immediately, at any hour — these are handled as the top priority regardless of time of day.
