Overview
The charming red panda, often called the “firefox,” is a rare and endangered species native to the Himalayas of South Asia. Its range stretches from the eastern Himalayan foothills of Nepal through Bhutan and India to southwestern China. Much like its distant cousin, the giant panda, this adorable mammal relies heavily on bamboo for its diet.
With its soft reddish-brown coat, fluffy ringed tail, and cat-like size (about 50–65 cm long and up to 6 kg in weight), the red panda is perfectly adapted to the cold mountain forests it calls home. Its short front legs and distinctive waddling walk only add to its unique charm.

Red Panda Habitat in Nepal
Nepal is home to roughly 1,000 red pandas, spread across 36 mountain districts. Despite this number, they remain critically endangered due to habitat loss, deforestation, and human activity. While many are protected within national parks and conservation areas, a significant portion—nearly one-fourth—live in community-managed forests in eastern districts like Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung, which currently lie outside formal protected zones.
Thanks to grassroots conservation efforts, these habitats are being preserved. Local and international organizations such as the Red Panda Network and The Red Panda Community have been working since 2007 to protect this species through habitat restoration, sustainable livelihoods for locals, and awareness campaigns.
