Personal gears for trekking in Nepal
Personal gear for trekking in Nepal

Before packing the clothes and gear for Everest Base Camp Trek or any Nepal trekking, you should have general knowledge about the trekking areas.

Do you know most of the trekking routes of Nepal begin from the subtropical region and go through the subalpine zone to approach the alpine zone above 4500 m?

As an example, the ultimate destination of most of the trails in Khumbu will be either EBC i.e trek to Everest Base Camp, Kala Pathar, or Gokyo. All these places lie at least above 5000 m from sea level. And most of the treks begin from either Lukla, Jiri, Bhandar, or Shivalaya.

What I am trying to say is that you should bring the gears that are suitable for the places.

Here I have listed some most recommended gear for trekking in Nepal.

Sun Hat or Scarf and Sunglasses

You will be walking during the day. Consequently, solar lights can be harmful to you as the temperature in the daytime might be 10 – 15 degrees Celsius in the trail areas. So, you need to bring a sun hat or scarf to save your face from the sunlight.

In addition, sunglasses are necessary to protect your eyes.

Head Torch

You are required to bring a head torch because if your trail crosses high passes like Renjo La, Chola, etc, then you will be heading either in the early morning. Early morning may be less visible in the mountain because of the fog. Meanwhile, you need a torchlight to see properly while walking.

Water Proof Jacket

THE NORTH FACE Men's Resolve water proof Jacket for trekking in Nepal

In the case of rain, a waterproof jacket might be valuable. So, it is suggested to bring a piece of a water jacket.

Basically, we don’t recommend bringing a waterproof jacket in Autumn (September to November) as the season is the best trekking season in Nepal.

The north face brand has excellent waterproof stuff. So, you can check it out.

Lightweight T-shirt

Light weight trekking t-shirt

While on the trek in the subtropical zone, you may not need to wear a heavy jacket. So, bringing a pair of tea-shirts will be a wise idea.

Avoid a cotton t-shirt because it observes moisture resulting in bad smells. A combination of lightweight short and long sleeve t-shirts is recommended.

Down Jacket

Berghaus Tephra down jacket for trekking in the mountain

A piece-down jacket must be needed for trekking in Nepal as you will be at the high-altitude zone like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Chola Pass, Thorung Pass, etc. The temperature may be negative in these places. That is why Down Jacket is a must for a mountain trek.

Down Jackets can be bought or rented in Kathmandu but might be fake unless you fail to find the original.

Recommended: For Americans, Eddie Bauer Jacket is great. In addition, Northface, Rab, etc are recommended. But for UK people, Berghaus Tephra is a good one.

Gloves: A pair of thick gloves

Thin Inner Socks: A pair of thin inner socks – is required for subtropical areas

Woolen socks: A pair of woolen socks – is required for sub-alpine and alpine zones.

Hiking boots: Must bring hiking boots (Comfortable boots preferred)

Trekking and sleeping bags: Nighttime in mountain areas might be severely cold. Although tea houses provide a blanket, it might not be enough to avoid coldness. So, you have to bring a sleeping bag. And a trekking bag is suggested to bring in order to keep your belongings.

Water Bottle: The metal bottle is preferred. Try to avoid the use of plastic materials as much as possible

Note: The above gear list is available in many gear stores in Kathmandu. So, if you don’t want to bring it from your home, it can be bought or rented in Kathmandu.
